Okay, so I lost out on having the new office manager report to me. Not the end of the world, because I’m still gonna wrap him around my finger like one of those little twisty wire ties that come with computer cables and stuff. And the best thing of all is that I’m the one doing the hiring, so I can be absolutely sure to get someone who’s competent enough to get the job done with a minimum of involvement from yours truly, yet easily influenced to pick up the rest of my duties that I’ve been wanting to stop doing anyway.
Unfortunately, it’s looking like a harder task than I thought. And not for the good reasons like too many qualified candidates willing to work for free or too many candidates with male modeling experience. The reason I’m having so much trouble is that we can’t seem to find anyone willing to do the work we described in the job specification for the salary we’re offering and who isn’t too stupid to handle it.
It looks like we’re able to get desperate idiots or expensive overachievers, but we’re missing that sweet spot of competent and desperate. So after over 50 interviews, all we’ve got is this one guy, and he’s really … well, kindof a jerk. And by “jerk” I mean 40-year-old-man-still-wearing-his-high-school-letter-jacket jerk. Yeah, that’s our viable candidate. Sucks to be us, huh?
Well, as nice as it is sharing my woes with you about the sour-cream of the crop that we seem to be attracting here, I’ve got to get back to interviewing more of the kind of quality people the rest of Doogleheimer & Schmitt is known for.
Present company excluded, of course.
